The real reason for top posting and extensive quoting is the
preservation of context.  This totally makes sense when sensitive
conversations are going on and new participants might be cc'd
late in the conversation.  The extra bytes are nowadays
irrelevant, and you do not depend on anyone to quote
intelligently.

Because a Usenet group archives the context, this practice
does not make sense there.  However if a group begins to
function by email instead of by some kind on Usenet reader,
the situation becomes more ambiguous.

Back to the StackExchange question, here is the modern
Usenet functionality (e.g., Google Groups) that I miss.
I would like to be able to create a filter, receive posts
to the filter as email, and respond by email.  (Email
has many advantages over site visits, not the least of
which is access to one's favorite editor.)  Is this
possible?

Here is the sx functionality that seems new and valuable:
rated answers.  I really like this.
