Greetings MikTex users.

I purchased a new laptop that has Windows 8.1 to replace a 10 year old laptop that has Windows XP.

On both machines, I use WinEdt to write LaTex files and compile them into .dvi files and the dvi2pdf button to make a pdf file.

On the Windows 8.1 laptop I have the same problem that was reported by David Allsopp on 2013-09-10
,
“When I try to convert my dvi file to pdf, the figures get messed up (e.g.,
 captions are printed over the figure). The dvi file is fine. And I am
 getting the warning "couldn't open font map file kanjix.map". Problem
 started when I re-installed MikTex on a new computer.”

A brief LaTex code to illustrate follows. (Probably any eps file will produce the same problem.)

\documentclass[12pt]{article}
\usepackage{graphics}
\begin{document}
\begin{figure}
\resizebox{15cm}{19.5cm}{\includegraphics{biostrat_1.eps}}
\caption{Data from ODP Leg 208 and ODP Holes 1237A and 1237B 1 .
\label{fig:biostrat_1}}
\end{figure}
\end{document}

%%Produces correct dvi file but caption is written across the figure.

I also tried some options as suggested by John Rudnicki and John Tennent.

%%\usepackage{graphicx}     %%These two produce
%%\usepackage{epstopdf}     %%the same as \usepackage{graphics}

%%\usepackage[dvipdfmx]{graphicx} %%This produces a dvi file with caption way below figure
                                %%but dvi2pdf then produces a correct page.
                                %%On a large (chapter size) file, however, this command produces a lock up.

In view of some discussion between Christian Schenk and Ulrike Fisher http://sourceforge.net/p/miktex/bugs/2286/ it seemed that the bug was fixed in April 2014.

I downloaded MikTex again 10-10-2014 and have the same problem.

On the Windows XP machine this problem does not occur.

I would greatly appreciate help with this problem.

Thank You

Jim Cornette
