Well, I've never used that wonderful editor you mention, indeed see
that has not been updated to run on a newer version of Windows XP.

On the other hand, just over a month began experimenting with portable
MikTeX, it is not very difficult to configure if you've worked with
MikTeX and know where to move it (set up). The biggest difference is
that you have not two identical menus: administrator and user, is just
one.

About the editor, although MikTeX comes with TeXworks is not the only
option available. You can use by example, TeXstudio which is quite
powerful, customizable editor and although it hasn't  shortcuts such
as you mentioned in your example, has their own and have the ability
to load the macros from the packages you use more (within a menu many
popular packages and classes).

where as you can see the trick for TeXmaker/TeXstudio is to write well
the path to your USB portable installation. Then you can run without
problems: pdflatex, latex, bibtex, biber, latexmk, xelatex, lualatex,
etc. My suggestion is to use a USB to at least 8 GB which can install
MikTeX and PortableApps with SumatraPDF, evince or your favorite
document visualizing program and other programs. To avoid
compatibility issues plus I suggest that you upgrade MikTeX completely
and upload all the missing packages. Depending on your connection
speed this may take several minutes or hours.
