Hi, Ian, Consider using ebb utility to create bounding boxes for non-eps pictures. Try good old dvips and then ps2pdf. At least this is necessary when using psfrags. Use ghostscript / ghostview ic case of any doubts with your eps pictures Your experience obviously speaks in favor of reasonable conservatism.
