The standard installer gives you the choice of a basic or complete installation. There's also an extra option to install hidden/obsolete packages to provide an even more complete installation. That's my recollection, anyway, from a recent MikTeX 2.9 installation .

as i remember there was a "full install" and a "basic install" package.

Net installer is not what I want/need.

You want the "Net Installer" - http://www.miktex.org/download in "Other Downloads". I didn't think it had changed name.
