That's my fault. The next (experimental) MiKTeX update leaked yesterday. 
It contains new luatex and xetex binaries, but it isn't good enough (as 
you possibly noted). You can go back to the last known good version by 
wiping the bin directory and running the update wizard again (the 
experimental download area is offline now).

Btw, the next MiKTeX update will be made available on Monday. As I said, 
it contains the latest xetex/luatex binaries (in sync with TeX live).
