My roots are gone

Hi all,
This morning, I updated the MiKTeX packages. And now, I can't typeset
roots anymore! If I compile this document:
\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
\[\sqrt[3]{x^3}=x\]
\end{document}
all I get is "= x", without the cubic root. And furthermore the log file
has no errors or warnings. Any suggestion?
