mgs.exe problem in miktex 2.9

When I updated miktex 2.9 mgs.exe now wishes to use an older version of ghostscript. How can I fix miktex 2.9 (on a Windows 8.1 platform) such that it will always use gswin32c.exe (vers. 9.16)?

Note, there is a kludge (previously posted on the web) that renames a copy of of gswin32c.exe to mgs.exe and then this mgs.exe replaces the one in miktex. This will work but, if miktex is updated this kludge will be undone!
