I installed on Windows 7 64-bit using: "basic-miktex-2.9.5105-x64.exe". This operation seems to work just fine. I then tried to use MiKTeX 2.9 | Maintenance (Admin) | Update (Admin) from the start menu. I accepted the packages automatically selected for update. This message is in the log file: mpm --register-components --verbose --admin: mpm.exe: regsvr failed for some reason. A similar failure occurs if I install using "basic-miktex-2.9.5105-x64.exe", then install LyX and accept the LyX installer's suggestion to automatically update MiKTeX. However, if I do not attempt to update MiKTeX and decline the LyX installer's suggestion, then LyX appears to function. At least, I can export a PDF using LyX and a previously created and used LyX source file. For now, I have a working install and intend to leave it that way for a while.
