This (error 121) could mean: the Windows Shortcut to the update wizard 
is broken. The target property of the shortcut should look like this:

PATHTOMIKTEX\miktex\bin\x64\internal\copystart.exe 
"PATHTOMIKTEX/miktex/bin/x64/internal\miktex-update.exe"
