Thanks, that worked on version 2.9.6236. I swear I also tried it on 2.9.6361 to no avail, but haven't repeated that experiment now I have a running MiKTeX again.

For those looking for older versions, I used ctanmirror to retrieve the older version:

I opened the "C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.9\miktex\bin\x64\mo_admin.exe"
program, "MiKTeX Settings (Admin)" and ran both the "Refresh FNDB" and "Update
Formats" commands. Since then, I have not been receiving any warning messages.
This is on a Win10 PRO - 64 bit machine.
