It is: everything is a collection of numbers in the end ... it is just
a matter of how many of these are available to the typesetting program.

On a slightly different point: InDesign uses some of the techniques
developed by Hermann Zapf for URW.  The documentation of that project
makes it clear that, for many of Zapf's techniques, considerable
information about the glyphs available is needed.  It seemed natural
in the URW and InDesign contexts that one would simply use the font
resources that are necessarily directly available to systems (all
except Don Knuth's probably) that `immediately produce typeset
output': the fonts themselves.

BUT: fractals, shmactals!  Total abuse of a technical term.
