In "Microtypographic extensions to the TEX typesetting system" by Han The
Thanh the hz-program is described (this is the only description I could find
on the web). The kerning (kf-) program apparently renders the font and
analyses the letter shapes (p. 39). Interestingly, and I do not believe this
has been mentioned yet in the recent discussion on automatic kerning,
kerning data could be calculated for different point sizes (p. 32), which
would, I believe, improve the output a lot. This is something InDesign seems
to do as well.
