In teTeX, if you call the program "tex" you get exactly DEK's tex.  It
is not based on pdftex and you only get hyphen.tex instead of some
language.dat file.  And it will pass the trip test.

The reason is that DEK maintains the TeX master sources on a teTeX
system.  It would be a bad idea to replace the original TeX by
something else.

BTW., if you look into the bin directory you'll see that tex is a
binary and no symlink points to it.  All other programs are symlinks
to pdfetex.

So, if you need french or german hyphenation you must use etex instead
of tex.
