Thanks a lot, Thomas. Following your suggestion, I tried to install the
latest
teTeX-beta on my machine (I'm running Mac OS X 10.3.3). Compilation was
successful,
but the installation phase ("make install") failed with several errors
when executing
"fmtutil --all". In the first place, there were several files
(/opt/local/teTeX/share/texmf-dist/tex/texinfo/texinfo.ini,
/opt/local/teTeX/share/texmf-dist/tex/plain/config/bplain.ini, ...)
which contained the
following typo:
\input pdftexconfig\pdfoutput=0
This, of course, produced an "unknown command" error and aborted
generation
of the format. After fixing this by hand, many formats were still not
generated. I.e., tex, texinfo,
and amstex failed as follows (for example, for tex)
running `tex -ini -jobname=tex -progname=tex bplain.ini' ...
This is TeX, Version 3.14159 (Web2C 7.5.2) (INITEX)
(/opt/local/teTeX/share/texmf-dist/tex/plain/config/bplain.ini

Error: `tex -ini -jobname=tex -progname=tex bplain.ini' failed
On the other hand, etex, latex, pdftex, and pdfamstex failed with the
following type of error:
running `etex -ini -jobname=etex -progname=etex *etex.ini' ...
warning: Could not open char translation file `cp8bit.tcx'.
! I can't read tex.pool; bad path?
Error: `etex -ini -jobname=etex -progname=etex *etex.ini' failed
The only non-standard thing I did in the configuration process was
to change texk/kpathsea/texmf.in by setting
HOMETEXMF = $HOME/Library/texmf
(standard in OS X), and running ./configure --prefix=/opt/local/teTeX.
Do you have any idea of what could be wrong?
