I.e., xdvi displays the Lucida font OK and doesn't crash in the last
example. The behaviour is the same if I substitute
\usepackage{lucidabr} with \usepackage{times}.

OK. xdvi-simple.log is for

and xdvi-times.log is for

In the latter case, xdvi crashed. There seemed to be written more info
to the screen than to the file. Is this OK?
