Just for the record: I have found the problem: I had an old
cont-sys.tex in my local texmf tree which behaves different with respect
to mapfiles. Now I have 

\autoloadmapfilestrue
\resetmapfiles

\loadmapfile[original-base.map]
\loadmapfile[ec-base.map]
...
