I think your installation is typical.  Some sites remove the o32 libraries
(or replace them with symbolic links to the n32 versions) to work around
such problems.  

I built teTeX-3 on SGI Irix 6.5.22.  Unfortunately that machine died
shortly afterwards, so I can only go by my rather hazy recollections. In
particular, I'm not sure whether I ended up using gcc or the MIPSPro
compiler. I do recall a bit of a fight getting tetex betas to use the
Motif-2 libraries.  I'd check for a libXpm.so in the SGI supplied
libraries and may try "-with-xdvi-x-toolkit=motif".  There was some
SGI option to make Motif-2 the system default, which worked for me but
breaks some applications.
