Hi,
thank you very much for your responses.
Below is (mainly for the archive)
what I did to get the fonts
working (apart from dsrom, which still looks "blurred").
I think they look fine, however I get many font warnings
(see below).
Clearly, something is not yet as it should be (but
everything I need to get my talk prepared for next week
is there ;-)

To get the fonts working (for me) I did the following:
1.) get cm-super
http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/ps-type1/cm-super/
2.) get hfbright.tar.gz
http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/ps-type1/hfbright/
3.) install both according to the corresponding instructions.
For hfbright I ignored the message
" Now, you should add the line Map hfbright.map to the
file updmap.cfg which should be in $TEXMFMAIN/web2c/ or
$TEXMFLOCAL/web2c/. Then, run updmap.
"
as I could not find updmap.cfg on my system.

All this is with debian testing (with tetex 1.0.2+20011202).
