Are you sure you tried the same settings in both cases?

With the latest upload, I changed the configuration to 
"EC fonts" while it used to be "slifonts+cmbright" before.

Well, ecfb0700 is a normal member of the EC tribe (though probably
seldomly used).

tfms are not usually distributed for ec. With teTeX, they are generated 
`on the fly' using mktextfm, but maybe CMacTeX uses another method?

Maybe you have turned off automatic tfm generation on the system
at work?

Are any messages about mktextfm (or a CMacTeX equivalent) failing
displayed immediately before the TeX error message.
In this case it might be that you don't have ecfb.mf.
