This is decided in part by the capabilities of the FTP daemon at the
remote end, which admittedly much vary from server to server.  That is,
how the FTP server was configured and started.

I did not check with RFC's, but from the fact the local FTP agent here
offers both `umask' and `chmod' user commands, affecting remote files, I
would guess the FTP protocol might have the necessary commands too.

This is all theory.  How it would translate in `aap', I do not know.
