I had been recommended to use docbook format (so that the docs could be
converted into just about any other format). I just used a few examples
and tuned them to make it work (which was less easy than it sounds).
I don't know the essential difference between SGML docbook and XML
docbook. Can both be converted to nice HTML and PDF? Are both
documented properly? I have been using the on-line version of the
O'Reilly book: http://www.docbook.org/tdg/en/html/docbook.html . It
looks it can be used both for the SGML and XML version, but it's not
very clear about this. The book was written in a very technical way,
it's quite hard to use.
The less tools we need the better.
Now that I have used docbook for a while I long back to MS-Word, not a
good sign...
