Just tested it and same here.
I don't know why, maybe Klemens will know. As far as I remember: Xfree has to 
be running with UTF settings(fonts?), to work properly with KMemAid UTF...

I was never interested in details as I normally don't use non-English 
characters.

Klemens, knock-knock, are you there? ;)
Or anybody who knows - how to set up Xfree to UTF?
There is nothing about fonts (besides path to fonts) in Xfree config file.
So I am guessing it's about locale settings and the right (UTF) fonts in 
"FontPath" in XF86Config?
