Very few new users / groups would think
of looking towards irc for assistance or
discussion or community these days.

way many people want to interact these

Some foss projects have moved (or
are moving) to matrix as providing a
more rich communications experience
under the open source umbrella it
offers (matrix is not quite a full slack
or teams replacement, but for many
use cases, it is good enough).

Matrix does offer an irc bridge, although
the free version is apparently not
especially performant for larger use
cases, but it is not clear to me if
supporting 1 / 2 messages a year is
worth the effort of setting up matrix
channels, or continuing irc (whatever
server set one chooses).  For the (extremely
small) number of questions one gets
on irc, email and/or github issues may
be sufficient for this project.
