I completely agree.

Generally speaking support for these roles is very new (well "new" for
XMLTV's age) and was one of the later additions to the DTD made in
early 2009

and is only properly supported in the Perl module since late 2013

Some stable older grabbers have simply never been updated to this
"fancy new stuff" which may be due to the distributed nature of the
project, with most developers taking care of one countries grabbers at
most. (I'm looking at _eu_epgdata right now)

The specific case of the Schedules Direct grabbers is best described by
the people that work on it.

Generally it is the grabbers job to translate between upstream and
downstream data models in the underlying concepts of XMLTV. In this
case that would be combining the show and episode level information.

But as we have very good chances to influence this upstream's data
model it is preferable to properly fix it at the source.
