I've been talking to Kalle about this already: this is basically 
because stdout and stderr are not piped to gCvs when the cvs tool is 
called. I've added code to AppGlue.cp (I think) a while ago to catch 
stdout and stderr on Mac OS X, but it's #ifdefed to Mac OS X for the 
moment.
I definitely found it very helpful to see that ssh access fails because 
it asks for a password (or maybe reports some other error or warning, 
e.g. if the host identity changed, etc.) ;-)
