RE: WinCVS vs VSS

You could point out that much of the internet is run by open source and
free software.  Think of dns, bind, apache, etc.

 

In the realm of operating systems, "most common", "virus", and "dollars"
apply to 1 OS in particular.  "free" and "virus free (almost)" apply to
another.

 

Paying lots of dollars is not a guarantee of quality.

 

The difference that matters most to me (as a developer) is that CVS does
not require file locking and VSS does.  This allows multiple developers
to work on different of a file without the need for 1 developer to lock
it and exclude all others. FWIW, I use CVS for _both_ open source and
commercial development.

 

You're fighting a well know mind set.  Good luck!

I am new to WinCVS, and like what I have seen so far. My problem is 
the client. I am having trouble convicing them to use it in place of 
VSS or StarTeam. The client is being told by other developers, who use 
VSS, that VSS is a better solution. The client is inclined to believe 
them because VSS is expensive and "you get what you pay for." If it is 
free, then is must be full of viruses and adware. Can anyone help me 
make the case for WinCVS?
