how to force PlainBinary encoding on all binary files in MacCVS?

Hi,

I am having a bit of a problem administrating CVS for a handful of
CVS-naive MacCVS users. The problem I am having is that when these
users add binary files to CVS, MacCVS is occasionally using BinHex to
preserve the resource fork in the binary. The problem is that when
these MacCVS users then try to check out these files, some of them get
an error like this:

cvsgui [checkout aborted]: Internal error: cvs_hqx.cpp, 497: Unknown
error: -50

and my WinCVS users (less naive but also less patient) get BinHexed files.

The work around is to check out the BinHexed file with WinCVS, change
the extension to .hqx, use something like WinZip to extract the file
from the archive and then check the file in with WinCVS.

What I'd like to do is have all binary files on the Mac be encoded
with PlainBinary which will strip the resource fork. (This is fine in
our case as the resource fork for the file types we deal with has
never proven to be of consequence.)

So one solution is to develop a list of all of our file types and have
all the MacCVS users edit their preferences to force PlainBinary
encoding on these types. This is of course an administrative problem
but maybe the only solution. So my first question is, can anyone tell
me if there is a file that I can setup with one MacCVS client with all
the file preferences and then copy to everyone else's machine to do this?

The solution I would prefer would be to set the global encoding to be
PlainBinary but with MacCvsX-3.3-alpha2 the only options are BinHex
and AppleSingle. So my second question is, is there a way with this
version of MacCVS to use PlainBinary enoding for all binary files?

Finally, I see here that it looks like someone has written some code
to add PlainBinary as a global encoding option:

http://www.koders.com/cpp/fid9CD8A66AC9547B6921732D5E48A417A361D6B416.aspx?s=mdef%3Ainsert

So my last question is, is perhaps this developer monitoring this
thread and would they be willing to post the corresponding MacCVS binary?

Thanks in advance.

Best,
Mike
