This error is returned by the CVSNT client not WinCVS specifically.
In each "checked out" folder there is a hidden folder named "CVS" with
several files in it, eg: if your "checked out" folder is c:\mymodule
then you can do this on the command prompt:
Type c:\mymodule\CVS\Root
Have a look at that, it should be like:
:protocol:User@host:/repo
Re-login (again the command prompt will do) using that EXACT string, ie:
cvs -d :protocol:User@host:/repo login
