Thanks for your reply. I managed to fix the problem *just* after posting.
I had two hostnames for the host, and was using one when I should have
been using the other.
To explain further, after reinstalling I did
cvs -d :protocol:User@host1:/repo login
whereas the previously checked out modules had
:protocol:User@host2:/repo
in the Root file! (host1 and host2 are the SAME machine)
So yes, doing as you suggested, using the EXACT thing found in the
Root would have created a registry entry, I presume. (?) I effectively
did this but via the wincvs gui Admin->Login and changing host1 -> host2
