"Error while saving preferences !"

after performing a chkdsk on my windows XP filesystem, every time i run 
WinCvs, it no longer picks up new workspaces that i've added, and i 
would have to guess it has something to do with the error message:

    Error while saving preferences !

this message appears immediately prior to the echo of every single 
operation i attempt to perform within WinCvs.

i tried looking online at the source to find the file that it is looking 
for to either remove it, but i was successful only in finding a loop for 
a struct that i'd have to debug to follow.

what is the preference file that it is trying to save?  and how can i 
rectify the situation so that my preferences are saved (and thus so that 
the error dialog goes away)?
