Can't check out a freshly imported module

Hello everyone, I am following this guide:

and on page 29 under "checking out a module - creating a working
directory" you check out the empty module you imported earlier. 
Instead of checking it out, the console displays:

cvs checkout: Updating module1
cvs checkout: in directory .:
cvs checkout: cannot open CVS/Entries for reading: No such file or
directory


I have all permissions to module1, which is in my cvsroot path. 
However, I was able to checkout the CVSROOT folder that was created
with install.  I created a text file inside module1 so it would not be
empty but I still cannot check it out.  How do I fix this?  Many
