The 1.0 version of gCvs is quite old, and built on the GTK 1 toolkit. 
There is a newer GTK 2 version available from source.  I believe you 
would find that more pleasant to use.  Unfortunately, that branch hasn't 
had any work done on it in several years either.

While I am humbled to say this (as I put some time into getting the GTK 
2 version to work), I think you'd probably be better off with a 
different CVS client.  Neither I nor the other contributors to gCvs have 
the time to continue working out additional problems.  With CVS seeming 
to fall out of favor, I don't imagine new contributors will step up.

Having said all this, gCvs 2.x does work, and has both Python and TCL 
integration, so if you'd like to give that a try, you might find it useful.
