Removing user from edited files

Hello,

I'd like to remove users association with a file as the one editing it.  For
example, I have a file which is being read as it's being edited by user x
and user y.  I'd like to remove user x and user y from that file so it's
considered being unedited.  But since I don't have access to user x or user
y's pc is there a way to do it.  I do have acces to the pc which holds the
repository.  I did see an xml file that add the users associated with that,
but refrain from modifying that for unknown consequences.  Is there a way to
remove the users or can I edit the xml file without any consequence.  Any
help is much appreciated.  Thanks.
