Sorry to hear that you are having problems here.  I'll try to explain some
of the changes and issues you are seeing.

'address' became a pure email address so the configuration would make sense
to new users, and the change justified by the fact that admins can modify
the templates (namely, footer.ezt) if they want something custom there.

I knew I would catch some complaints about this change, but ViewVC 1.1.x got
rid of five (5) different, incompatible, competing, incomplete syntax
highlighters, and added a single one that doesn't require forking off one or
two additional system processes per view.  The Pygments library seems to
work quite well for most folks, so I'm happy to work with you to determine
what's not working for you.

Hrm.  There definitely was a period of time where the 1.1.x branch wasn't
displaying icons.  But that was after 1.1.2, and my own 1.1.2 installations
don't exhibit problems.  I wonder ... is there any chance that the Fedora
folks packaged something other than stock 1.1.2?
