Hrm.  I have my ViewVC and Subversion instances protected by passwords and
such configured on different servers, but I don't experience this problem
myself.  I can see getting prompted for a password once when you view the
page, but your browser should be caching that information and reusing it
when, after parsing the return HTML, it finds that it needs to return to the
server to request the various stylesheets and icons and such.

As you appear to be seeing this problem with both your ViewVC and
direct-view-of-the-repository URLs (and based on my knowledge of what ViewVC
is doing), I think we can rule out ViewVC.  And since you see this with
different browsers, and apparently even different users and machines that
you've shared the links with, I think we can rule out a client-side problem.
 So that really just leaves the web server -- I think this is a question you
need to ask of the Apache HTTP Server community.
