I've considered something like this before.

Stepping back a bit for the wider view, I've also been tempted to do
something a bit more flexible and just introduce URL format versions:

   /viewvc/*1*/...
   /viewvc/*2*/...

This would allow me to arbitrarily redefine the URL formats in what would be
compatibility-busting ways from time to time, and just bump the format
number -- which is carried in the URL itself -- when I do so.

Cheesy? Oh yeah. But sooooooo forward-looking.
