I'm amazed that this was not answered. I'm going to add an answer for
anyone who comes looking later.
We make extensive use of brokers, but so far haven't run across any reason
to point a replica at one. All of our replicas point directly to masters
(production or test/dev). Only client software (users, automated jobs) point to
brokers.
If we were going to split requests from a replica among upstream servers, we
would probably have to use a broker. But for any other case, it's just going
to slow things down, if only by a little, for no real gain that I can see.
