OK, thanks, now I can generate a distribution and try it again.

I just now did that, and found a couple of things.  First, I
reported the wrong GCC version number; this is actually
GCC 4.4.2, though I don't think that matters.  Second, I
still get the same diagnostics that I previously reported in
<http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-rcs/2010-09/msg00003.html>.
Third, I'm attaching the config.log as requested (in compressed
form to save space).
