   One other thing I think I may have been doing earlier as well
   was mixing in various GNU tools that the system happens to
   have.  I've done an additional build with a plain vanilla
   PATH=/usr/bin, and that works too.

Great.  I think we can lay this thread to rest now.  Although i
still have the sed scripts to audit and the memory tool warnings
to ponder, those activities can be performed asynchronously.
