An example is git-svn, which adds a line at the bottom of commit messages that looks like git-svn-id: http://cvs2svn.tigris.org/svn/cvs2svn/trunk@5031 be7e6eca-30d4-0310-a8e5-ac0d63af7087 In this case I don't know specifically whether the information is used by the software or is just there for user edification.
