Thank you for reporting. The error message in TortoiseSVN is unfortunately
a bit missleading, most of the times it turns out that it is actually
TortoiseSVN not properly vetting user input - this may be the exception
though.

Very good you found the root cause. I agree that it shouldn't fail with an
assertion. Unfortunately I'm not able to reproduce the issue. I even
registered a free account with Sliksvn (
https://svn5.sliksvn.com/apachesubv_tsvntest/) and when i try to do the
checkout with incorrect case in the repository name, I get an error message
"The server at 'https://svn5.sliksvn.com/Apachesubv_tsvntest/' doesn not
support the HTTP/DAV protocol". If I try to checkout a directory (/trunk)
using the wrong case I get an error message "URL '
https://svn5.sliksvn.com/apachesubv_tsvntest/Trunk' doesn't exist".

Are you able to reproduce the issue using the command line client?
Something like:

D:\>svn co [URL] D:\Docs\59-xxxxx

(The TortoiseSVN installer has a separate option for installing the command
line tools, in case you miss the svn command!)
