Thanks, makes sense. Yes, the non-request for password is because the credentials cached by TortoiseSVN is also used by the command line client.

You can do whatever way you want: either you take the mail you sent only to me, updating with the extra information, or you forward our conversation, saying it was accidenally off-list.

does work (small letters in the URL) and result in a successful checkout.

One more remark, it did not ask for a password, presumably because I already had supplied one for this repository to the tortoise graphical UI.

Daniel Sahlberg  responded on my earlier email below, and we had a one-on-one follow-up. From that conversation, I performed a few additional tests


  *   Installed the command line tools
  *   Tried to checkout the URL with wrong capitals letters with this result:
D:\Docs\svntest>svn co https://cqm.sliksvn.com/CQM0000 d:\docs\svntest
svn: E235000: In file 'D:\Development\SVN\Releases\TortoiseSVN-1.14.x\ext\subversion\subversion\libsvn_client\util.c' line 96: assertion failed (svn_uri__is_ancestor(pathrev->repos_root_url, url))
(last 4 characters in URL replaced by 0000)

And again with right URL (no capital letters after /)

D:\Docs>svn co https://cqm.sliksvn.com/cqm0000 d:\docs\svntest2
<list of files>
Checked out revision 7.

It did not prompt for a password, presumably because I already had supplied one for this repository to the tortoise graphical UI.

Oh, that's bad, but good. If it is reproducible in the command line client it is more likely to be an easy fix.

Am I right in guessing that the correct command line should be

D:\Docs\svntest>svn co https://cqm.sliksvn.com/cqm0000 d:\docs\svntest

(with the correct digits)?

Maybe you could just do a checkout that succeeds so we can "see" the difference.

I also assume that cqm0000 is the repository name (just like apachesubv_tsvntest in my case).

Can I just ask you to re-send the same message to [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> so we have it in the e-mail archives? You can add the above information in the mail when you re-send it.

Thanks for the quick response! That prompted me to try your experiment via the command line. I ran the installer, to install the command line tools and the same

for confidentiality I changed the URL last 4 letters so that it ends in 0000.

If I can do another quick experiment to help you, please let me know.

Thank you for reporting. The error message in TortoiseSVN is unfortunately a bit missleading, most of the times it turns out that it is actually TortoiseSVN not properly vetting user input - this may be the exception though.


I updated svn to the latest version (TortoiseSVN 1.14.7, Build 29687 - 64 Bit , 2024/04/15 22:07:08)
Restarted the laptop (windows 11)

At last a colleague noticed that I used capitols in the repository URL after the / . Replacing it to small letters solved the matter.
This seems like straightforward thing to fix and what I read on a forum somewhere is that wrong user input is not supposed to result in this sort of error, hence I write this email.

Very good you found the root cause. I agree that it shouldn't fail with an assertion. Unfortunately I'm not able to reproduce the issue. I even registered a free account with Sliksvn (https://svn5.sliksvn.com/apachesubv_tsvntest/) and when i try to do the checkout with incorrect case in the repository name, I get an error message "The server at 'https://svn5.sliksvn.com/Apachesubv_tsvntest/' doesn not support the HTTP/DAV protocol". If I try to checkout a directory (/trunk) using the wrong case I get an error message "URL 'https://svn5.sliksvn.com/apachesubv_tsvntest/Trunk' doesn't exist".

Are you able to reproduce the issue using the command line client? Something like:

D:\>svn co [URL] D:\Docs\59-xxxxx

(The TortoiseSVN installer has a separate option for installing the command line tools, in case you miss the svn command!)
