Shift+d is duplicate. Alt+d is linked duplicate, which only makes sense when there are blocks to link (two objects, one mesh block). If you want meshes that follow what you do, you want linked. Docs could be a bit outdated, but the idea is in the images: http://www.blender.org/modules/documentation/htmlI/x3363.html Linked duplicate is also nice to make columns, for example, as you can edit one and all will update.
