RE: Alt-D not doing what I expect.

I think you better use Shift-D for duplicating.
I believe Alt-D shortcut works only in object mode.
Shift-D works both in object and edit mode.
And for mirror, it should be M (in edit mode) or
Ctrl-M (in objetc mode) and then select the proper
mirror axis.
