How do you do a project? (action vs. model)

Hello. I once trained myself on Hash's Animation:Master. The cool thing about that app is that it clearly differentiated between Models and Actions. They were separate entities. Now in blender, it almost looks like my model is "trapped" in the animation file I'm making. If I make changes, will they go to all the frames? How can I get the figure trapped in my current walk cycle to be free for another project where I might want to pose it entirely differently? BTW: thanks for the earlier advice on painting vertices, et al. I now have a character that is like this: http://putfile.com/pterandon That link may or may not be the actual walk cycle file, but I'm on a linux box and i cannot see exactly which putfile file is the right one for my latest project.
