The different materials is deliberate, that is what I want. I don't want all the faces to be the same color, they need to be different. What is needed is a way to ensure that the inside faces stay inside, and don't show through. By the way, the bug report I filed was closed; basically, I guess it falls in what the software industry calls a "feature" rather than a bug, i.e. an inherent limitation to the package that cannot be fixed with the present concept. I was advised to make my scene smaller, which is not that easy to do, given this is a SPACE scene, with lots of space ships that need ot have some distance between them (it is space, so you have to show some) but with one object in the foreground.
