Sounds like I might be able to help both of you out.  If you open up the
hidden User Preferences window (if you're not sure how to do that check
this page
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro/Blender_Windowing_System#User_Preferences)
, click "System & Open GL", and enable "Emulate Numpad", the number keys
on your laptops will act like the number keys on a number pad, and you
won't have to constantly be switching NumLock on & off.

Also, you want to make sure you have a good laser mouse that works on as
many surfaces as possible, has three buttons, and preferably is cordless
in order to minimize traveling-with-laptop-blender-frustration.  A
laptop touchpad is nightmarish to use with Blender.
