I started using blender on a laptop. I still do actually.
For better view I bought an extra screen, for better control an external
mouse (actually a trackball, but that's personal choice).
Depending on your tastes you might want to get a real-size keyboard too,
but even without 3D accel you can use blender. What 3D accel will do for
you is make it smoother... I've also noticed that it eats quite a bit of
battery too, at least when dealing with a scene above a few thousands of
polys...
