I know this is and old post. But I recently came across the very same thing that the authour mentioned. If you do a Make dupliverts real In 2.41 all the dupicated object have the same color. I did the with hemispheres. I know what button you guys are talking about. It was there in the previous version's Material panel but trust me just as the author said its NOT there in 2.41. The button with the number is just not there. It was in 2.23 and 2.25 and I THINK( I would have to fire it up to check in 2.3x) but not in 2.41 I just checked again to make sure.
